I Come to you in the Name of the Lord

1 Samuel 17:45-46

Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  "This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you…    (NKJ)

Everyone loves the story of David and Goliath.  Good verses evil.  The underdog and the champion pitted together.  A duel to the death – fighting against all odds.  A young, seemingly naïve boy, with peaches and cream complexion, face to face with the battle hardened monster.  What drama – or so it would seem.

In the eyes of the spiritually blind this was a most frightening moment in history.  With one skirmish of two men the losing nation would become a slave of the victor.  Certainly, all of the men of Israel were frozen in their fear to fight Goliath.  No one would dare go against him.  There was too much at stake.  They were no match to the giant.

There was one in the company of the blinded that had godly 20/20 vision.  His name was David.  He alone was cured of sin sick eyes and could see the way God wants us all to see.  As I Samuel 16:7 says, “…the Lord see not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”  David’s heart was right before God.  Goliath’s was in defiance of the Maker.  No man can defy God and live.

The young man who could see as God sees, didn’t measure the man by his size.  Size is only relative – a perspective or point of view.  He wasn’t going to fight a Giant, only deliver a message to someone rather miniscule, in comparison to God, who had determined to take on Goliath Himself.  The men of Israel saw Goliath and feared.  David saw God and said,  “Let’s go get him.”

One stone in Goliath’s glass forehead and the over hyped media event was finished.  The outcome was never in doubt.  In this corner, the Mighty Goliath – all 9-10 feet of him – the six fingered wonder.  In the other corner God who fills all in all.  David pulled the sling, but God flicked the rock.

How are you seeing things?  Have you learned the see life the way God sees it?  How big is your biggest problem in comparison to the Almighty who has said He loves you?  Maybe today is a good day to ask God to let you see the heart of the matter.  Now trust Him.
