A New World Order

I have always been fascinated by reading about the Return of our Savior.   From childhood to this day when the skies are billowed by the intriguing massive shapes of fluffy white clouds, I stare at the heavens and wonder, "Could this be the day?  Is He just behind that one?"

To me the Day of His Coming is today, - every day.  I watch in amazement, hope and righteous fear. 

Yet, before the glory clouds come the storm clouds, those ominous signs of the earth groaning for the return of its maker.  Jesus spoke of some of those signs in Matthew 24.  Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelation place additional indicators into the conscience of man that something significant and loathsome will precede that day of rejoicing.  As craters on the the moon pockmark the landscape, so also is the Bible riddled with verses foretelling the events of the Last Days.

One such happening promised in His Word is that concerning a one world government that would arise and be taken over by the Antichrist.  Speculations abound as to who that will be and what governing body he will rule from.  The guesses fill the spectrum of possibilities from the Catholic church, to the rise of European Union, to the United Nations.  No one knows for sure, but all believers are looking for the development to happen, and that very soon.

Perhaps I am just muddying the waters more, but as I scan the internet for news of interest, my eyes feel upon a quiet meeting in the Italian alpine resort of St Vincent last week.   Relatively secretly the former leaders of Poland, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, prime minister Giulio Andreotti of Italy, prime minister Malcolm Fraser of Australia, with the support of many others including former president George Bush Sr. met with former Russian leader, Mikhail Gorbachev.  For several years Mr. Gorbachev has been traveling the world over preparing for this gathering, and much larger ones to follow.

The purpose of this meeting, called the World Governance Forum, was simple.  According to Mr. Gorbachev, after World War I the League of Nations had been established, after World War II the United Nations, and after the end of the Cold War, he believes that new structures are needed to govern globalization.   Former US presidential candidate George McGovern who attended this forum, saw this as an "enormously important step forward in the history of the World".  It is the beginning of a response to the rising international political difficulties.  As Mr. Andreotti said, these are "experienced politicians who realize existing international institutions cannot handle new problems."  So it is their goal to start the ball rolling to form a new world order, a super government that is capable to lead the world into a new era.

As I said, this may not be the one world government that the Bible speaks about, but, isn't it interesting that there are serious plans in the minds of men for just such a government?  The day is near for a fulfillment of God's Word concerning this final event in human history before the Return of Christ.  The Lord told us to be watchful and not slumber when we see things as this.  Watchful believing eyes do not need to scan the universe to wonder any more.  The headlines of newspapers give us clear indication that something significant is afoot.  It is time to make sure that we have enough oil to light our lamps in the night, for the Bridegroom cometh.
